Global floods affect thousands of lives

Global flooding is a phenomenon that is increasingly occurring and affecting thousands of lives throughout the world. Climate change, rapid urbanization and poor water resources management are the main causes of this phenomenon. Many areas previously safe from flooding are now facing increased risk from extreme rain and melting ice in polar regions. One real example is the floods that hit Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, where many areas were submerged in water due to high rainfall. Urban areas such as Jakarta often experience severe inundation, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate. The impact of flooding is not only physiological, but also social and economic. Many houses were destroyed, agricultural land was submerged, and jobs were lost, resulting in uncertainty for the community. In Europe, the devastating floods of 2021 have shown how vulnerable infrastructure is even in developed countries. Germany and Belgium suffered severe damage, with many lives lost as a result of this disaster. This highlights the importance of better mitigation efforts and early warning systems to reduce risks. Water resources already stressed by pollution and overuse also worsen the situation. Rivers that can accommodate rainwater are now no longer able to function properly because of sedimentation and waste that obstruct the flow. This resulted in flooding in previously unaffected areas. Social injustice also plays a role in the impact of flooding. Poor communities often live in flood-prone areas without access to adequate facilities. They are more vulnerable to losing their homes, health and livelihoods. Post-flood recovery programs often exclude these groups, leaving them in more difficult situations after a disaster. Technological innovation is now a hope in dealing with the impact of flooding. Satellite-based weather monitoring systems help predict extreme rainfall, while smart drainage systems are designed to reduce waterlogging in cities. Public education about water management and disaster preparedness is also very important in reducing flood risk. The government’s role in dealing with this issue is no less important. Policies that support environmental protection, river revitalization and sustainable infrastructure development are crucial steps that must be taken. Likewise, international collaboration is very necessary because floods do not recognize national borders. Through collective awareness and planned action, it is hoped that the impact of global flooding can be minimized. Environmental restoration projects, building green open spaces, and investing in clean technology are strategic steps to create community resilience to these disasters. Ensuring that communities are empowered to face floods is part of our collective responsibility. This is a complex challenge, but not something that is impossible to overcome if all parties work together.
