Neighborhood Alert – Crime Watch and Crime Prevention

Neighborhood alert is a nationwide community-driven crime watch and crime prevention program. Volunteers patrol their neighborhoods, observe suspicious activities and report to law enforcement when necessary. Volunteers receive training from local law enforcement to prevent them from becoming nosy neighbors, engaging in direct confrontations or taking vigilante action. The goal is to observe and report rather than actively stop criminal activity. Neighborhood Watch programs also teach residents how to deter crime by putting their homes on guard by locking doors, placing exterior lights on timers and asking a neighbor to check mail and keep yards up to date.

Neighborhood Watch programs have a positive impact on the safety of the surrounding community and businesses. People in the area are more likely to look out for things that are unusual such as a stranger looking into or entering parked cars, anyone loitering outside businesses after hours, windows breaking, noises like gunshots, and more.

Residents can also make their neighborhood safer by forming block or community groups, requesting police presentations and setting up a security review. The City of Tulsa offers free security presentations for neighborhood and community groups upon request.
