What is a Corruption Probe?

A corruption probe is an investigation into allegations of bribery, embezzlement or other forms of corrupt behaviour. Corruption investigations may be handled internally by an organisation (through disciplinary procedures), or externally, through regulatory or criminal procedure. Regardless of the type of action taken, it is essential that a thorough and fair investigation is conducted. Grand corruption is rarely proved by a single piece of evidence, so it is often necessary to put together many pieces like a jigsaw in order to show that wrongdoing has occurred. Therefore, investigations into corruption are complex and lengthy. It is often best to have a team of people who are highly experienced and well-versed in the laws of corruption.

Police and specialised anti-crime agencies are at the forefront of investigating and preventing corruption. They have a range of investigative tools at their disposal including questioning witnesses, obtaining and analysing documents and records and intercepting telecommunications.

For example, in 2022, FBI agents raided the homes of several European Parliament MEPs and Chinese tech giant Huawei on suspicion of bribery, forgery, money laundering and criminal organisation in the Qatargate scandal. Since crooked politicians are an important factor in weakening trust in government and breeding discontent, the FBI has always made public corruption one of its top priorities. Moreover, local field offices are regularly reminded to keep a robust public corruption program and be alert for signs of corruption in their areas.

Ultimately, confronting corruption is in everyone’s interest. It helps strengthen the rule of law, bolsters trust in government and fosters safer communities and improved living conditions.
